The first things that you will need to do are get a copy of your current credit reports. If you have not already done so, you can get a copy of your report for once a year for free at annualcreditreport.com. Once you have your credit report you will need take the time to review it carefully. Make a list of everything that is negative that you feel will need addressing.

Once you have your list, select the three items that you feel need addressing first. Ideally, start with items that are legitimately incorrect. If this is not an option pick accounts that are between two and five years old. Write letters to the credit bureaus and send them via certified mail.

While disputing information in your credit file can help, the reality is that this is just a beginning. You will not be able to clear up all of your accounts simply by disputing the information with the credit bureaus. There will be some entries in your credit report that only time can take care of. For example, there is no legal way to remove a bankruptcy from your credit file. But, for other accounts, you may be able to use debt validation or the 623 method to get your credit report cleaned up.
